Carrowhugh
Welcome to Carrowhugh, Donegal, Ireland.
Welcome to our website about Carrowhugh, a townland on the Inishowen peninsula, situated about three miles north-east of Moville, in County Donegal, Ireland.
Inishowen is known as "Ireland in miniature" for her stunning scenery, bays and beaches. Splendid ancient wonders such as the Giant's Causeway and the Grianan of Aileach are an easy drive away, as is the historic Maiden City of Derry (so called because her defences have never been breached).
The area has it's dark side, too. Not that many years ago our coast was rife with smugglers bringing the finest of goods to Derry and Donegal. And we had the reputation of producing the best poitin in Ireland in pot-stills hidden deep in the heather-covered mountains and away from prying eyes. And then, just down the road, in Carrowtrasna, you'll find Murder Hole Brae ..
Today, Carrowhugh is an easy thirty minute drive from Derry. We are literally a couple of minutes jaunt from the Foyle ferry at Greencastle, making the counties of Derry and Antrim and even Belfast very accessible for a day trip.
But why not stay in Carrowhugh and enjoy the slow pace of Inishowen life, the scenery and the craic? For sports, we have great walking, fishing and world-class golf courses locally. And in nearby Moville and Greencastle, you'll find bars with traditional music, restaurants with grand food ... and everywhere ... you'll find the craic.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Some local photographs ....
Pat
Burns' house, on the Upper Road, Carrowhugh, about 1938. Pat is
second from the right. The other families shown are the McKeevers
and the Dohertys, from Derry. Both the wives Maggie McKeever (neé McLaughlin
- centre) and Mary Anne Doherty (neé Crumlish - right) came from
the immediate area.
This
recently refurbished cottage, now a holiday let, was occupied by
the local blacksmith, Michael Cavanagh, in the 1820s. His family
may have been tenants long before then. The cottage is situated
up the small lane (the Wee Loanin') off the Upper Road in Carrowhugh.
